Dear BEO teams,
Welcome to the penultimate Forum Post.
Last week, we announced that our last post will be on Friday, 28th February. However, due to operational reasons, we will have to delay next week’s post until Monday, 2nd March.
More importantly though, this week has been an eventful week. By now, you should have received your campus placement for BEO 2020 as well as your role and stance for the BEO Debate. If you think that you have not received either of these two emails, please get in touch with me or your country representative as soon as possible.
Finally, if you have not submitted all your student data and photographs via the BEO Portal, we would like to ask you to please do so over the weekend so that IDs for your students can be processed.
Many thanks & see you soon!

GENERAL
Question:
Could you remind me what students have to say in their speech during the opening ceremony?
Answer:
This should be a very brief introduction of your school. In the past, students presented where they were from, shared a fact or two about their school and often expressed how they felt about taking part in the BEO. However, the content is ultimately up to you.
Question:
When can we sign up for the talent show?
Answer:
You will be able to sign up on campus.
PRESENTATION EVENTS
Question:
Is it possible to use a clicker for forwarding slides during presentations?
Answer:
Yes, it is. Clickers will be available at the centres, but if you have one you could bring your own.
Question:
Can the article from Investigation be an opinion article? Does it have to be exclusively a news article?
Answer:
This is difficult to answer without seeing the article. However, I believe that with an opinion article it could be very difficult to assess whether it is truthful or not because the author would be entitled to their opinion either way. I would suggest looking closely at the brief and the judging criteria for the event before you make your final decision.
DEBATE
Question:
In the debate, the objective is to determine if schools have the right to ban access to digital devices during school hours. Under what country’s legal framework should we be discussing this?
Answer:
Students should consider this as a global issue. They can use examples from countries that have proposed and/or introduced this ban. But they can also lean on the attitudes and trends in their home country.
CREATIVE EVENTS
Question:
We were wondering, are there going to be instruments available for students to perform? One of my students would like to perform a song on guitar, but she will not be able to travel with her instrument.
Answer:
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee any musical instruments.
Question:
Are students allowed to go backstage when they are not performing their parts during the presentations or drama? For instance, in the case of the drama, if they are not able to do so, it would probably be packed and there will be too many people in the 4 meters space we are given. We also have an idea about one character changing her costume during the Country Spotlight presentation, so we’d appreciate it if you could clarify this.
Answer:
Please do keep in mind that the 4 meter space refers to the space between the screen and the light. There is very likely to be more space on the sides and at the back of the stage that the students should be able to use.
However, while we try to schedule all drama performances to take place in theatres, this may not be the case for all presentations. Some presentations will take place in alternative spaces, such as assembly halls, etc. and these may not necessarily have a traditional backstage space.
Question:
We thought we could have a pair of students interacting in front of the screen, however I read only one student is allowed to be in front of the screen, can you confirm this?
Answer:
Yes, that is correct, only one student can appear in front of/on the side of the screen.
Question:
Is it possible that different students (who play different characters) take turns to be in front of the screen instead?
Answer:
Yes, that is absolutely fine as long as it is one student at a time.
Question:
Are we allowed a projector that we can connect to a computer with a USB inside it?
Answer:
Unfortunately, projectors will not be allowed during the drama performance. There will be a computer connected to a PA system, so if you bring background music and /or sound effects, you will be able to play it through the computer but it must be operated by a student.
Question:
Can we pre-record the audio and music for the shadow theatre or must it be live?
Answer:
You could pre-record music as per my answer above, but the students’ performance and delivery of lines must be live.
Question:
Will the light be a normal light or LED light?
Answer:
Please see Post 1 for technical information and drama set up.
